Quiz Quest is a story that took multiple rounds of reworking before it arrived at its present format. The original premise for the book follows a team of school children who don’t see eye-to-eye. In the story, they come together for the greater good: to win a difficult national-level quiz competition. The book is inspired by Chak De! India, and envisioned for children, with quizzing taking center-stage instead of hockey.
We roped in 2 interns, Akshyah and Vishali- Humanities students from IIT-Madras, to help us expand on the plot, add complexity to the characters, fine-tune their relationship with each other, and pepper the story with interesting facts. After every third chapter, we collected feedback on it from our colleagues, using Google Forms! (It’s a very organized way of going about things.)
We weighed in their inputs and incorporated wherever relevant. To complete the process, we made sure to do this before taking the story to schools. As and when the children heard the tale progress, they enjoyed learning more about the characters, and especially loved the quizzing action.
After the writing process, we printed the book with a simple cover before we working with illustrator Suzzanne Rebello Narayanan. She designed a fresh, vibrant new cover that truly captures the essence of the story. Here are both her versions of the cover:
