Description
Excerpt from the book:
“Team B, please lower your voices. Do you have an answer?” The quiz master’s voice sounded like a death sentence to Nikhil.
Pramod replied, “Sorry sir. Could you please repeat the question?”
With a sigh, the quiz master obliged. “The territory of Porus was situated between the rivers of (A) Sutlej and Beas (B) Jhelum and Chenab (C) Ravi and Chenab (D) Ganga and Yamuna.”
Ananya was the team’s expert on Indian History. Nikhil looked at her expectantly. He put immense pressure on her with his body language, without realising it. She was confused. Tears started to flow down her cheeks. Pramod held Nikhil back while Ananya whimpered. Everybod —the teams, the quiz master, the teachers in the audience, the journalists and the TV cameras—could see Ananya crying.
“Team B. Such behaviour is highly inappropriate. Get your act together. What’s your answer? Now!”
Pramod looked at the buzzer, then at Ananya’s fingers. Ananya had pressed the buzzer, but she didn’t seem to know the answer. This wasn’t the first time she had made a mistake. Back in the first round, Nikhil and Ananya had disagreed over an answer. The team had finally gone with
Ananya’s answer. She had been wrong. Nikhil had berated her for the error. Since then, Nikhil and Ananya had bickered constantly, and it was affecting the team.
Pramod was fighting this battle alone. This was the last question. If they got it right, they’d place third, and would qualify for the national round. If they got it wrong, it was the end of the road for them.
Why did Ananya press the buzzer? Wondered Pramod. She must have thought she knew the answer. Pramod mentally ran through the list of books Ananya was supposed to have read. Had Porus been assigned to her? King Porus had fought Alexander. It had been Alexander’s last battle in the East. Sutlej, Jhelum, Chenab, Beas— weren’t they all very close together? Which was the river Alexander had crossed? Every battle is next to a river. Which river?”
